Designed for the bench or the field, the SiG-20 signal generator serves as a CW generator up with tunable frequencies from 100 MHz to 20 GHz in 1 Hz steps.
The user interfaces include USB and Ethernet. A Windows-based GUI is provided for control over the USB port. And a browser-based GUI can be used to control the SiG signal generator over the Ethernet port. A SCPI-based command-set is also available, enabling complete remote access and control. The “Just Right” Signal Generator
Syntonic Microwave’s SiG-20 Signal Generator is an instrument giving state-of-the-art phase noise and frequency stability, with a tunable range up to 20 GHz.
Phase noise and spurious performance is consistent with most demanding test equipment, receiver or carrier transmitter requirements.
Tuning is accomplished via Ethernet and USB. The Signal Generator includes an internal reference which will auto-lock to an external 10 MHz reference when present.

High stability and low noise in a compact chassis
The SiG-20 Signal Generator is designed to provide everything you need in a compact chassis. That is, excellent phase noise, from near-in offsets out to the very wide offsets. The high-stability, low-noise, accurate system clock provides an output for sync’ing and daisy-chaining to adjacent, downstream and upstream equipment.
High quality, high performance system reference
Multi-loop synthesis techniques are employed in the microwave frequency plan to give the DS-3000 microwave synthesizer its excellent phase noise performance. Phase noise is further supported by the high quality, high performance system reference, giving users outstanding “near-in” phase noise characteristics. Excellent spurious suppression is a natural outcome of Syntonic Microwave’s synthesis methodology.
High speed internal switching
Fast tuning is accomplished in the design through high-speed internal switching and settling. Plus, users are given a LIST MODE for pre-loading up to 5000 list entries for enhanced switching/settling through known frequency steps. List management is handled either directly, through the customer interfaces, or via external file (Excel, CSV) for convenience.
The User Experience of the SiG-20 has been optimized to match the interface environment expected of today’s microwave signal generators. This includes:
- an executable GUI running on a PC or laptop,
- a SCPI machine interface for embedded applications,
- browser-based GUI accessible via the ethernet port
PHASE NOISE: A Detailed View
The SiG-20 Signal Generator is offered with two different phase noise profiles, the “Standard” version and the “Ultimate” version. The performance of the “Ultimate” version is geared for the finest in phase noise performance, particularly in near-in phase noise, at 100 Hz and 1 kHz offsets from the carrier. Improved frequency stability is another feature of the Ultimate version. Details of the performance and differences are shown below.
At the heart of the Signal Generator is a system reference controlling frequency accuracy and sync to the outside world. Syntonic Microwave offers two versions of the reference oscillator – either TCXO or OCXO-based. The phase noise and frequency accuracy of these clocks enable best of class performance and provide a reference output that can be used to synchronize all adjacent equipment.
The SiG-20 can be controlled by the Windows-based GUI, which controls the device through the USB Port. Typically, bench-top operations are very conveniently handled using the GUI and a laptop, while system integrators take advantage of the SCPI-based command. A browser-based GUI is also accessible via the ethernet port.
